Don’t expect to see Apple’s WWDC AR / VR headphones this year, the analyst said

This story is part of WWDC 2022, the full coverage of CNET by and for Apple’s annual developer conference.

Apple will not release its long-standing rumors of AR / VR headsets at next year’s WWDC event, reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted on Tuesday.

(1/2) It’s still a while before Apple’s AR / MR headphones go into mass production, so I don’t think Apple will release WWDC’s AR / MR headphones and realityOS rumors this year. Apple’s competitors around the world can’t wait to see the hardware specifications and design of Apple’s AR / MR headphones.

Rumors and reports earlier spread the release of headphones in 2022, and Apple’s board reportedly saw a demonstration of the product earlier in May. Although Apple has in the past shown upcoming hardware at its global developer conference, Kuo wrote, it will still be some time before the headset is mass-produced, so he doubts it will appear at the conference, which begins Monday.

I’m sure that if Apple announces AR / MR headphones and their WWDC operating system, competitors will immediately launch copy projects and happily copy Apple’s great ideas and appear on store shelves before Apple launches in 2023. “Kuo added.”

AR refers to augmented reality, in which images are superimposed on a real-world setting, as opposed to VR or virtual reality, which completely immerses a computer-generated environment. MR is a mixed reality that combines real and virtual worlds.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Previous speculation says the headset will run on Apple’s M1 chip and resemble a higher-end Meta Quest.

WWDC 2022 runs Monday through Friday and will be available for live viewing. Apple is expected to unveil iOS 16 at the conference. Here are the new iPhone features that CNET editors hope to see there.
