Doug Ford will mark the upcoming reduction in the gas tax in Brampton today

Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford plans to mark the upcoming reduction in the gas tax in the province of Brampton on Thursday.

He will be joined by Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfall and Transport Minister Caroline Mulroney for the announcement at 10 a.m.

The reduction in the provincial gas tax promised by Ford is due to take effect on Friday.

The government passed legislation this spring to reduce the gas tax by 5.7 cents per liter, as well as the diesel fuel tax by 5.3 cents per liter, for six months between July 1 and December 31.

Experts say this may offer some relief to drivers facing incredible pump prices, although the long-term benefits may be more unpredictable.

Regular fuel prices are close to two dollars per liter in Ontario cities.
