Toronto police say a man is dead after crashing into a home in Beaches on Sunday night and causing a gas leak.
Emergency crews responded to the collision near Queen Street East and Kingswood Road.
The driver did not react and was trapped in the truck after the accident. Toronto Fire eventually managed to rescue the only occupant, but he was later pronounced dead.
“Essentially one vehicle was south of Kingswood, which is a T-junction as it approaches Queen Street,” Duty Insp. Jeff Bangild told CP24 at the scene.
“This vehicle crossed to the south side of the Queen, in an alley between two houses, where it eventually hit a garage port. As a result, the driver of this vehicle died of his injuries. “
After the collision, a gas leak occurred, which has since been restricted by Enbridge Gas.
Toronto Fire Chief Brian McAlindon said “explosive levels” of gas were observed in the basements and main floors of neighboring properties, forcing evacuations in the area.
“Our great concern was not only the crews working there, but also the people living in this block. “The immediate block, we evacuated just to make sure it was safe,” McAlindon told CP24 at the scene.
The circumstances that led to the crash are unclear, but McAlindon said the vehicle appears to have hit the property at high speed.
An investigation into the crash is under way.
Queen Street East is closed from Scarborough Road to Victoria Park Avenue, but is expected to reopen within an hour.
Other details from the police are not reported.
