Burnaby’s RCMP says the driver was lucky to have escaped with only minor injuries after her car exited the overpass on Highway 1 on Thursday night.
The driver lost control of a white SUV while driving on the Grandview Highway around 8:15 p.m., crashed through a guardrail and fell a few feet onto the highway below, according to Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Michael Calange.
The SUV landed on all four wheels in the grassy area separating the east and west lanes. The driver, a 49-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Kalange said things could be much worse.
“Landing on all four wheels facing east and west [lanes on] Highway 1, it’s amazing, “he said.” The driver of the vehicle is doing well … she’s very lucky. “
Kalange said the SUV would be towed when it was safe.
The accident closed all the eastern lanes for about an hour, which led to significant congestion.
Two lanes reopened around 9:15 p.m., according to DriveBC.
The Burnaby RCMP remained on the scene to investigate. The guardrail is being repaired.
The RCMP does not believe that alcohol or drugs are involved, and does not rule out speed or time as possible contributing factors.
