Drivers can expect delays if they travel on the Coquihalla motorway this long weekend.
Due to damage from the floods in November 2021 and ongoing restoration work, parts of the highway are two lanes in each direction. The busiest traffic is expected to be on Sunday from 1 pm to 8 pm, advised by the Ministry of Transport of BC.
Drivers are encouraged to adjust their travel plans to avoid peak hours or to consider using Highway 3 as an alternative route between the interior and the lower continent.
Drivers on other routes throughout the province should also expect higher-than-average traffic and plan accordingly.
General tips for safe travel include:
– allows extra time to reach your destination due to more people on the roads;
– make sure your car is ready to drive with a full tank of gas or a charged battery, check the engine oil, washer fluid, lights and tires, including the spare;
– packaging of food and water for passengers and pets;
– planning of holidays in rest areas that can be identified by:
– monitoring for motorcyclists and sharing the road with cyclists and other users;
– compliance with all announced speed limits and driving with caution, especially in bad weather;
– leaving the phone alone while behind the wheel;
– ensuring that all passengers wear seat belts at all times; and
– never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
