Anyone who has tried to have a summer beach day on Lake Buntzen in Anmore knows how early you have to get there for a parking space.

But that is about to change, as BC Hydro has announced that it is launching a new system for free online parking reservations for the lake to help reduce congestion in the area.
From 27 June, all drivers will be required to visit bchydro.com/buntzen to make a vehicle reservation the day before their visit to Lake Buntzen.
BC Hydro spokesman Kyle Donaldson said visitors would be asked by staff to provide proof of their reservation. And they must carry a digital or hard copy of the reservation when they enter the site.
Anyone who tries to enter the car park without a reservation will be rejected.
“Over the next few weeks, we will continue to work on a public education campaign, and this will include updating signs in the area,” he said.

“Lake Buntzen is an amazing place to visit all year round, but we know it’s especially busy in the summer,” Rick Glumacch, MLA, told Port Moody-Coquitlam in a statement Wednesday.
“I hope that the new online booking system, piloted by BC Hydro, will help reduce the frustration of parking so that families and visitors can fully enjoy the amazing outdoor experience that Lake Buntzen has to offer.”
Anmore Mayor John McEwan said in a statement that residents have had to deal with excessive backups of traffic over the past few years and is pleased that BC Hydro is introducing a parking reservation system.
BC Hydro has been developing the system for several months and says similar parking reservation systems used by other agencies have significantly reduced vehicle traffic.

Users will have the opportunity to book a pass to access the car park for the morning or afternoon time. Reservations are linked to the car’s license plates and are non-transferable.
BC Hydro said all-day tickets will not be available at this time. Visitors entering the park in transit or on foot do not require a pass.
More than 700,000 visitors have access to hiking trails and swimming areas on Lake Buntzen each year, according to the agency.
In July 2021, nearly 116,000 visitors used a vehicle to access Lake Buntzen. This is an increase of about 83,000 in July 2019.
The pilot project starts on June 27 and will last until September 5.
