DURAM, North Carolina – Police in Durham were investigating a shooting Sunday night when they found themselves on the line of fire after two vehicles brazenly crossed the scene and fired.

Officers responded to a shooting at Block 1000 on Worth Street around 10 p.m. Investigators did not find anyone who was shot, but found a vehicle at the intersection of Elm Street and E. Main Street that was hit by gunfire. There was no one in the car.

After officers blocked the surrounding section of the road, drivers in two vehicles turned onto E. Main Street and drove through the crime scene while firing, police said. In response, two police officers fired on the suspects. The report from the police does not include whether those in the vehicles shot directly at employees.

Both cars fled the scene. No officers were injured.

Police learned that a man entered the nearby hospital with a gunshot wound without danger to life on Sunday night. Investigators still do not know if this man was involved in the shooting on E. Main Street and Elm Street.

Employees involved in the shooting are placed on administrative leave, which is a standard shooting procedure involving an officer. SBI is also part of the investigation.

There were two shootings over the weekend that took place a mile apart on Holloway Street in East Durham in less than 24 hours.

On Monday night, Durham leaders will try to find solutions to gun violence as officers hold a public interview with ShotSpotter’s CEO. The company’s technology detects shots and notifies the police.

The technology sparked a heated debate at a recent budget meeting of the Municipal Council. The municipal council approved funding for technology testing this year.

The town hall starts at 6:30 pm in the church of St. Joseph AME on Fayetteville Street.
