Early reactions to The Gray Man praise the next-level action

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo want to start their own franchise with The Gray Man, and judging by the early reactions, it sounds like the first installment is going to be a hit. The action thriller stars Ryan Gosling as Cort Gentry, a CIA black ops mercenary who accidentally uncovers the agency’s dark secrets. He quickly becomes a prime target and finds himself being hunted by a gang of international assassins and his former colleague Lloyd Hanson (Chris Evans).

Most who saw The Gray Man at a recent screening applauded the fast-paced, well-constructed action sequences and badass characters, with particular praise given to Indian actor Dhanush. Not everyone was as enamored with the film, with Kyle Buchanan of The New York Times saying it was Netflix’s emptiest star vehicle yet. You can check out some early reactions to The Gray Man below.

The Gray Man is two hours from James Bond meeting The Fast and the Furious. Super exciting action, huge scale and sets, solid, self-aware performances, constant laughs, just a lot of fun. Gosling and Evans rule, supporting cast great, a little obvious but never boring. pic.twitter.com/hSoTwgCMfA

#TheGrayMan is a high-octane action thriller with a fun, antagonistic (and at times hilarious) dynamic of Ryan Gosling vs. @ChrisEvans . Ana de Armas was one of my favorite elements, proving once again that she is a dynamic force in any action film, while Dhanush is a complete badass! @netflix pic.twitter.com/4nt76jEb18

IMO #TheGrayMan will get a lot of comparisons to the Bourne franchise, but the action sequences and fight scenes in @Russo_Brothers’ latest are next level. Also, these movies have never had a villain as evil (and funny) as Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen. 👍🏽👍🏽 pic.twitter.com/JTabHxnKJs

#TheGrayMan on Netflix is a solid action thriller (the streamer’s best yet) with great performances from Gosling, Evans and de Armas. The fight choreography and stunt work are excellent to say the least. Overall winner.

THE GRAY MAN is a tactically aggressive killer action film from the Russo Brothers. Ryan Gosling pits his usual stoic toughness against Chris Evans’ wicked charm. It’s not as impressive as the Mission: Impossible or John Wick movies, but it’s still a cool piece of popcorn. pic.twitter.com/ggXuErNUYs

THE GRAY MAN is just 2 hours of Tom Clancy dropping off shouting mindless nonsense like “make him dead” between boring action scenes in beautiful locations, all leading to the most hilariously stupid bad guy backstory I’ve ever seen. almost made me nostalgic for Red Notice.

THE GRAY MAN is Netflix’s emptiest star vehicle yet. If DALL•E simulations cost $200 million, this is exactly what they would produce

With a budget of over $200 million, The Gray Man is one of Netflix’s most expensive movies, but they’re already planning a few more. In addition to the direct sequel, which will be written by Stephen McFeely, a prequel focusing on Chris Evans’ character is also reportedly in the works by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

The Gray Man Official Synopsis:

Break out of a federal prison and recruited by his handler Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly skilled death dealer sanctioned by the Agency. But now things have turned around and Six is the target hunted around the world by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former CIA operative who will stop at nothing to take him down. Agent Danny Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll need it.

The Gray Man will be released in select theaters on July 15th and will launch on Netflix on July 22nd.
