Incumbent Danny Davis will defeat Kina Collins to win the Democratic nomination in the 7th Illinois Congressional District, CNN projects. Davis is running for a 14th term and there is no Republican running for office.

As crime became a growing problem before the interim terms, County 7 became a focal point in the Chicago area. According to the Chicago Violence Reduction Panel, two of the four “summer safety zones” the city has identified for additional coverage are within its borders, including the Austin and West Garfield Park areas. Many urban agencies devote resources to “summer safety zones” to respond to high levels of violence.

During the campaign, Collins, a community activist, tried to illustrate his close ties to the city as he criticized Davis for the missed votes on Capitol Hill. For his part, Davis dismissed the issue of votes, saying he had never missed a significant one in a long career, where he estimated he had cast more than 15,000. According to GovTrack, Davis, who has served in Congress since 1997, missed 1,012 out of 16,410 registered votes, or 6.2%.
