More than a dozen people were also injured in Tanjawur County in the southern state of Tamil Nadu after a 9-foot (2.7-meter) chariot-drawn vehicle was hit by high-voltage lines.
“I hope the wounded recover soon,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter, offering his condolences to the bereaved.
Some of the wounded were injured in the fall after an electric shock, and others escaped the flames when they jumped from a chariot carrying statues of Hindu deities in addition to the worshipers.
The chariot returning to the nearby temple was left as a charred ruin.
Fire trucks and local authorities joined the rescue effort.
