Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said Monday he thinks former President Donald Trump should “hang up his hat and sail off into the sunset.”
Writing on Twitter, where Musk has more than 100 million followers, the celebrity CEO said: “I don’t hate the guy, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat and sail off into the sunset. Democrats should also call off the attack — don’t make it seem like Trump’s only way to survive is to regain the presidency.”
A bipartisan special committee of the House of Representatives is holding public hearings to present the initial findings of a year-long investigation into the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol by a crowd of Trump supporters. The commission’s next public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Trump called Elon Musk a “bulls— entertainer” over the weekend, claiming Musk had said he voted for Trump in previous conversations between the two men. But Musk tweeted to deny that claim and fired back at Trump on Monday night.
The Tesla CEO previously said his first Republican vote was for Mayra Flores, the winner of the South Texas special election in June.
Musk also revealed last month that he is “leaning” toward voting for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis if he runs for president in 2024.
Musk’s comments about Trump came after a busy day for his business.
SpaceX, his reusable rocket company, conducted a ground test of a rocket booster that ended in an unexpected explosion in Boca Chica, Texas.
Musk also faced a legal challenge from Twitter on Monday after he tried to scuttle an earlier deal he struck to acquire the social network for $54.20 a share. Twitter says its grounds for terminating the deal are “invalid and unlawful.”
Musk’s electric vehicle maker Tesla saw shares fall on Monday after Shanghai stepped up mass testing for Covid following reports of two dozen new cases there. The tests raised fears of a resurgence and more shutdowns, which could again hamper Tesla’s China factory operations.
