“Legacy,” HBO’s drama about a feuding media dynasty, earned 25 nominations at this year’s Emmy Awards on Tuesday, the most of any show.
The HBO series earned a nomination for best drama, the award it won in 2020, as well as multiple nominations in the acting categories, including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, J. Smith-Cameron, Nicholas Brown, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen.
HBO’s “The White Lotus,” a limited series about wealthy vacationers at a Hawaiian resort, earned 20 nominations, and the Apple TV+ comedy “Ted Lasso” also earned 20. “Ted Lasso” won last year for best comedy and will face a new entrant this year, Murder Only in the Building, the Hulu series starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. “Murder Only in the Building” earned 17 nominations, an impressive number for a rookie show.
Netflix received three nominations for best drama, including for hit Stranger Things, the first season of South Korean thriller Squid Game and the final season of crime thriller Ozark. “Squid Game” earned 14 nominations, the most ever for a foreign language show.
The Emmy love is welcome news for Netflix executives after an ugly few months that have sent the streaming giant into a tailspin: its stock price has plummeted, hundreds of employees have been laid off and a week remains before a possible announcement of a new subscriber loss.

But Netflix’s biggest rival for the Emmys, HBO, and its companion streaming service, HBO Max, had a big year and were armed with a slate of programming that brought home a significant number of nominations, including for “Legacy,” “White Lotus,” Euphoria, Hacks, and Barry.
HBO and HBO Max finished with 140 nominations, the most of any network or television studio. Netflix is in second place with 105. This is the second year in a row that HBO, along with its streaming service, has overtaken Netflix.
Bragging rights at the Emmys was crucial for Netflix, and that was before it needed a shot in the arm.
Last year, when Netflix tied a 47-year-old record held by CBS for the most Emmy wins in a single year, its executives took a victory lap, holding a media press conference to boast about their “historic” night. And when visitors enter the lobby of Netflix’s Hollywood headquarters, they’re greeted by the sight of dozens of Emmy statuettes mounted on a wall, surrounded by hundreds of flowers.
The nominations for the Emmy Awards were announced on Tuesday. The ceremony will be on September 12, broadcast on NBC and live on the Peacock.
