Emotional Andreescu thanks support team after finishing second in Bad Homburg

Canadian Bianca Andrescu paused to wipe away tears as she spoke to her support team after the Bad Homburg Open final.

Andrescu finished second after losing 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 to Caroline Garcia of France on Saturday.

This was Andréescu’s first final on grass and her first final in more than a year. The 2019 US Open champion took a break to recover from injuries and focus on her mental health before returning to the tour in April.

“My team, I wouldn’t be here without you guys. All the support you gave me, “said an emotional Andrescu as he addressed the audience. “You guys stayed with me during the most difficult times, and that’s all anyone can ask for, so thank you.”

Andrescu, who defeated top-ranked Daria Kasatkina in the quarterfinals, advanced directly to the final after Simona Halep was forced to retire from the semifinals due to a neck injury.

“It was great tennis and a point here or there, but I had a great week overall,” Andrescu said. “I’m very happy with how my grass game is going. This is my first grass final. A lot of progress is happening, so I’m happy.”

The 22-year-old football player from Mississauga, Ont., Is now preparing for Wimbledon and will face the American qualifier Emina Bektas in the first round next week.

“I am very happy, it was a difficult year, but I will start working for the next ones,” said Andrescu. “I’m excited about Wimbledon now.”
