England lost 30-28 to Australia in the first game of the three-match series in Perth on Saturday.
The Wallabies’ win snapped an eight-game losing streak against their old rivals despite losing Darcy Swain to a red card before half-time.
Wing Jordan Petaya, shocker Folau Fainga’a and loose forward Pete Samu scored tries in the final quarter as Australia recorded their first win over England since dumping the hosts from the 2015 World Cup.
Samu’s try put Australia 30-14 ahead, but England debutants Henry Arundell and Jack van Poortvliet scored tries in the final minutes to make the result more respectable.
The series continues over the next two weeks with Tests at Lang Park in Brisbane and the Sydney Cricket Ground. Follow all the reactions with our live blog:

England beaten by Australia with 14 men in first Test
England slumped to a fourth consecutive loss as their magic touch against Australia finally left them in a 30-28 loss in the first series at Optus Stadium.
The Wallabies had second-row Darcy Swain sent off for a header in the 34th minute, but Eddie Jones’ tourists were still unable to secure a ninth successive win in the game.
It is the second game in a row in which they have failed to finish off 14-man opposition, having been beaten by the Barbarians at Twickenham in their last outing.

Last in front of the Sky Sports microphone is Eddie Jones
“We had enough chances in the game to win it. At 14-9 with 20 minutes to go, we should have conceded the game, but we didn’t. Now we have to win the series 2-1 and make sure we don’t drop them next time.
“In some ways, a red card can work against you. Then the referee starts judging him differently and we probably didn’t adjust well enough today.
“The message at half-time was to put more pressure on them and we did that in spurts, but we were on their line a few times and didn’t finish it. We need to sort out our finishing ability in attack. Defensively, we could have chased them a little more.
“[Henry Arundell] will be a good player. If he can continue to study and work hard, he will be a special talent for us. There are some positives from the loss, which we are very disappointed about.”

Dave Rennie for his side’s victory
“I’m really proud. We lost Quade before the game, we lost Allan and Banksy before half time and then the red card. We lost tackles on both sides of the ball, so I’m really impressed with the character and decision-making in the second half.
“I thought our leaders did a fantastic job of solving problems on the fly. We know England have a lot more, so we’ll be ready for that next week. We gave away too many penalties, so there is a lot to fix.”

Big win for Australia
Australia probably needed such a win. There were moments in that first half when it looked like a day where everything could go wrong, with Quaid Cooper getting injured before kick-off, two other starters also forced out early, and then the sending off of Darcy Swain. But it speaks volumes for the character that Dave Rennie has instilled in the side that they were able to hang on and then decisively win the game. Their big players stepped up – Michael Hooper, Nick White, Samu Kerevi – and Noah Lolezio came into the game more and more after his late call-up as a starter. The way they attacked an England side on the ropes to extend their lead also showed a real ruthless edge – and that Pete Samu goal proved necessary.

F/T: Australia 30-28 England
It’s another tough day for England. Eddie Jones’ side continue to struggle to put teams away, even when dominating for good periods. There was a lot to like about the way their carriers attacked and so often won the gain line, but there was little real cutting to follow through and capitalize on the opportunities that were to come.
Those two late results for Henry Arundel and Jack van Poortvliet rather mask some pretty significant cracks. Their attack still looks very disjointed and lacked control and direction in the second half.

And some thoughts from Michael Hooper
“With all those things that happened, you can’t plan for that. I’m proud of our coaching staff for coming up with a plan and our guys partially executed it tonight.
“We’re going to break down the game, what’s working, what’s not, how we can turn this around in seven days. We know a different beast is coming and we expect to improve as well.”

A frustrated Courtney Laws spoke to Sky Sports
“Obviously I’m very disappointed. We came in with a strategy which we didn’t execute and Australia were the better team so fair play to them.
“We talked about discipline and we didn’t perform on that front. This disappoints us. Our defense wasn’t good enough today but we played some good rugby. That’s the good thing, we have a chance to correct our mistakes [next week].”

F/T! Australia 30-28 England
Well, wasn’t that all pretty fun. A 6-6 half-time tussle gave way to a proper ding-dong back-and-forth after the break, with Australia showing heaps of quality and fight to take control of the game. The 14-man Wallabies were deserved winners after a day in which everything seemed to go wrong for Dave Rennie’s side to earn their first victory over England since the 2015 World Cup. Eddie Jones’ winning streak against his old employers has ended .
