Boris Johnson’s plan to rescind the government’s Brexit agreement for Northern Ireland is illegal, the European Union said today.
Maros Shefcovic, the European Commission’s chief Brexit negotiator, has announced plans to resume lawsuits against the UK’s move.
He described the decision to unilaterally change the Northern Ireland Protocol as a violation of international law, which is “extremely detrimental to mutual trust and respect between the EU and the United Kingdom”.
“Let’s call it things. This is illegal, “he said of the government’s Northern Ireland bill, which was introduced on Monday.
In retaliation, the European Commission has launched three separate infringement proceedings against the United Kingdom for non-compliance with the protocol. One is an old case, frozen last year to aid negotiations
