Everton’s first away game of the new season against Aston Villa is today’s televised midday contest in the UK.
Frank Lampard resisted any temptation to play forward, with Rondon on the bench despite returning from suspension and Dele not starting for the second leg, leaving the serially underpowered front three of Gray, McNeil and Gordon to represent the attack.
New signings Onana and Vinagre are on the bench, where there is only one youngster from the Academy: Stanley Mills. Allen is not included due to a “minor knock”. Townsend, Mina, Calvert-Lewin and Gomez are out with injuries.
Everton kicked things off in the bright sun, wearing their yellow away strip in full, but Villa countered quickly to win an early corner. Excellent ball from McGinn, headed by Carlos at the far post. Villa attacked down the left and Holgate tracked down his man before forcing home an excellent strike.

Gordon’s first contact saw him fouled but not a free kick.

Let’s see if Cole’s work with Gordon pays dividends. There’s something to be said for sticking with the team. We have to support the manager in this.

Same idea as last week, but it didn’t work, and I’m going with the same. I was worried last year when he picked the same away team that worked at home… but now he’s picking the same formation that didn’t work at home and using it away.

Ian. You’re right in some respects, but the manager didn’t have much of a choice. Ali is probably on top, but to be honest he looks awfully off the pace. As for Rondon, please. Probably one of the worst strikers I have seen at the club. And that’s saying something. Get a point now by being honest. But I need to score not 1 but 2 strikers.

Kim (8), Rondon was banned for three games after being sent off against Brentford, he played two games at the end of last season and one last week against Chelsea.

The team must always play the best available in the right position. If Rondon is the only forward, then he should play.

How many times does this manager need to recognize the duff line-up. They obviously went for a draw, which is pretty much the limit of our hopes these days. There will be changes, but only when we fall behind!

I thought we were toothless up front last week and I’m surprised he continues with the same 3 I thought Onana would start Surprise but Lampard has seen them all week and obviously thinks starting 11 is best Fingers crossed he’s got it correct

Without being negative anymore, I hate the hell out of this formation. I think he’s here to stay because Thelwell adores him.
Of course we have to play 4/3/3 like everyone else in the damn league, I get 5 at the back against top 6 teams but not everyone else. I just hope I’m wrong but I see Villa making it 2-0 to us today.

Then there will be complaints that we are not playing with Messi, Neymar and Benzema. Keep moaning until we play, for God’s sake! We don’t have many options up front and it’s not the fault of the manager…board etc. maybe, but not to the manager. Let’s see how the game plays out. We never replaced Lukaku, but it is what it is, so let’s get behind them. Very bad luck to be deprived again…
