Everything Apple Sherlock did in macOS Ventura, iOS 16 and iPadOS 16

WWDC is both exciting and frustrating for developers as Apple adds new products that are great but directly compete with them. Here are the reports this year that will affect third countries.

A term familiar to many in the Apple community is “Sherlock.” Sherlock, named after the fictional detective, was a search tool introduced in Mac OS 8. It expanded the search for files in the Finder and was replaced by Spotlight in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

After the launch of Sherlock, a company called Karelia Software created a tool called Watson. It complements Apple’s search tool and supports more Internet functionality. But when Apple released Jaguar’s Mac OS X 10.2 in 2002, Sherlock’s third version contained almost everything Watson had to offer.

Watson cost $ 30, but Sherlock was free because it was built into the system and Karelia went out of business. Developer Dan Wood wrote a blog post saying that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had told him it would happen.

“Do you know these carts, the little machines that people stand on and pump to get on the rails?” This is Karelia, “Wood said at the time. “Apple is the steam train that owns the rails.”

The term was then intercepted and “Sherlocking” refers to products that Apple is replacing with its own versions. It has happened many times with third-party products such as Konfabulator, f.lux, Growl and others.

Here are features that Apple has expanded that the developers have already provided.

Passwords

Apple has announced passwords, an initiative it is working with Google, Microsoft and the FIDO Alliance.

These companies want to end passwords by creating a more secure version that people don’t have to remember. Many users do not have to remember passwords thanks to password managers.

Access keys in macOS Ventura

But access keys are designed to be easier and faster to use, and password managers like 1Password and Bitwarden will need to rethink their strategies.

Announced on June 3, 1Password is teaming up with FIDO to navigate the future without passwords. In future versions of its password manager, starting with 1Password 8, users can log in to the application without a password using WebAuthn.

WebAuthn is a protocol developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium. It allows login without passwords using public key cryptography. In 1Password 8, users can integrate their private keys with the application, making it a virtual security key.

Apple’s access keys will support physical security keys based on WebAuthn. Although access keys will be stored in the iCloud Keychain, they can be used with platforms such as Android and Windows with QR codes.

Webcams

Apple will compete with webcams and webcam applications with Continuity Camera. Allows iPhone to be used as a webcam for Mac with macos Ventura and iOS 16. No apps or cables will be required other than a stand to hold the iPhone in place.

Creators of physical webcams will not go out of business, but applications such as Camo, IVCam and EpocCAM may be more affected. These apps also allow an iPhone user to turn the device into a Mac webcam.

The consolation is that iOS 16 no longer supports older iPhone hardware such as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Customers will need to use these applications if they want a webcam without having to buy an expensive product.

MacOS Ventura Continuity Camera

Continuity Camera will be available on the iPhone 11 or later, running iOS 16. It will use the iPhone’s wide-angle lens to provide multiple views and use software features such as Stage Light to enhance the user’s appearance on the screen.

Edit photos

Apple makes it easy to automatically isolate an object from its background in a photo. This works in the Photos and Files apps by long pressing the theme and tapping Copy or Share in the menu that appears. Here you can download a shortcut to iOS 16, iPadOS 16 or macOS Ventura to automate the process.

Pixelmator Pro added the Magic Background Eraser in November 2021. Ongoing tests reveal that Apple’s offering has an advantage, as the Pixelmator Pro sometimes has difficulty with similar colored objects and backgrounds.

Erasing the background is a feature added to popular photo editing apps, but a cursory search in the App Store reveals many tires for one purpose.

Some of these focused apps may disappear completely unless they can do a better job than Apple. Isolating a subject in a photo is not easy, especially against a cluttered background. But Photos does a surprisingly good job of a brand new feature in the beta operating system.

Package tracking

Apple is introducing package tracking in the Wallet app in iOS 16. It displays detailed information for receiving and tracking orders directly.

Like the rest of Apple Pay, they are delivered securely and confidentially to the device. Works with e-commerce platforms like Shopify and other merchants with every purchase made with Apple Pay.

Track orders at Apple Wallet

Delivery apps are already at risk, and Apple’s move is tightening its grip. On April 5, Mike Piontek wrote about the future of Deliveries, tracking packages.

The blog says that JuneCloud can no longer maintain the same level of service. Companies like Amazon are restricting access to data and many more services will not appear directly in Deliveries.

Instead, users will need to tap the “Browse Online” button in the app to see the tracking data on the shipping company’s website.

Email

Mail updates are not as big as Apple presents them. However, they parry the app with other email apps. Features such as email scheduling, unsubscribing, and reminders to open an email later are three new reasons to keep Mail by default.

Options for macOS Ventura in Mail

Mail can also intelligently detect missing email items, such as an attachment or a copy recipient. If a person forgets to answer, the system will send an automatic proposal later.

Search

Spotlight has more options to stay ahead of or ahead of competitors such as Alred and LaunchBar.

Users can now find images from their photo library, across the system and on the web. Photo Search works by location, scenes, objects and people, Live Text allows the Mac owner to search for text in images.

Productive update allows people to take action in Spotlight. Creating a new document, starting a shortcut, or starting a timer will appear in the tool.

Finally, Spotlight includes rich results for movies, actors, artists, TV shows, business and sports. Some competitors remain ahead of Spotlight, but Apple has taken it a few steps closer.

Window management

Stage Manager is a new way to manage and organize applications and windows in macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16. The current window is displayed in the center, and other workspaces appear on the left.

macOS Ventura Stage Manager

Alternative window management applications such as Mosaic and Moom may still have advantages. Apple’s MacOS may display windows next to each other, but competitors support other configurations.

Video conferencing

An example of how Apple products work together is the FaceTime update.

Elements can be dragged and dropped into workspaces and the system will remember the position of each window relative to the others. People can use Handoff to transfer live video calls between devices.

Although not a complete Sherlock, this is a feature that other video conferencing applications do not have. This makes FaceTime much more attractive to users.

What Apple had to kill

The updated 13-inch MacBook Pro was one of the new laptops that Apple announced contained an M2 chip. It also still contains the Touch Bar, a controversial feature calling for her death. Already 14- and 16-inch models have thrown it away.

Apple introduced the Touch Bar in 2016, a thin OLED strip that sits over the keyboard and replaces the function keys. It offers touch options and displays function keys, application controls, media controls and more.

But some users have said it has no useful purpose and many application manufacturers do not support it.

Apple will inevitably compete with developers and other third parties as the company strives to improve the all-in-one experience.
