No casualties were reported after a fire of three alarms tore a home and spread to neighboring homes in western Toronto on Monday night.
The fire broke out around 7:30 pm in the area of Emerson Avenue and Dupont Street.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find black smoke coming from a home that was eventually engulfed in flames.
A woman living next door said she was cooking dinner when someone knocked on her door and told her she and her children had to leave the house.
“My girls were doing housework in the room. Someone started banging on my door and ringing like crazy. I called one of my girls to open the door. She opened the door, and all I heard was someone say, “Get out – there’s a fire.”
The woman, who did not want to be identified, said the house, which caught fire, was empty while a new owner made repairs.
She said she grabbed her children and dogs and ran away from home.
“We were standing here watching our house burn,” she said.
She added that she had been told that “the whole roof in the back half of my house has disappeared”.
No casualties have been reported so far.
The fire appears to have originated on the third level, where the floor was laid, but the cause of the fire is still unknown.
Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Peg said conditions were difficult for firefighters, with a special weather report due to high temperatures in the city.
“An extremely challenging day for our @Toronto_Fire teams,” Peg tweeted. “Dealing with 3 major fires at once – one 3rd Emerson alarm fire plus two 2nd alarm fires – Halsey Ave and Gerrard St East – makes it even more challenging for our crews to work safely at high outside temperatures.”
