Flights are delayed at Calgary International Airport this morning due to an outage in the airport’s navigation system.
An airport spokesperson confirmed to CBC News that the system outage with Nav Canada has led to ongoing issues.
There is also an ongoing problem with WestJet’s self-service baggage drop-off, although earlier domestic issues with infrastructure and online payment services have been resolved.
Baggage self-service is not functioning properly in Calgary, as well as in Ottawa, Saskatoon and Halifax.
“Guests are encouraged to arrive early and check flight status before heading to the airport,” the airline said in a statement on its Twitter account.
Nav Canada, which operates the country’s air navigation system, said the outage was caused by one of the telecommunications service providers, Zayo. According to Nav Canada, Zayo was estimating a recovery time of two to four hours as of about 8:30 a.m. MT.
“Ensuring the safe movement of air traffic in Canadian airspace is Nav Canada’s top priority,” Brian Boudreau, a spokesperson for Nav Canada, said in an email.
“As such, air traffic control will temporarily reduce the flow of departures and arrivals in some situations until Zayo restores service. Procedures are in place to ensure the safety of aircraft in our airspace.”
Due to NAV CANADA and WestJet system outages, guests flying through YYC may experience delays. We appreciate your patience as we support their efforts to resolve the issues. Please check with your airline for flight information. We will provide updates if available.

The airport spokesperson said more updates will be provided as they become available.
A spokesman for the Toronto Airport Authority said the outage appeared to affect only Western Canada, adding that operations at Toronto’s Pearson Airport were normal.
