Flood in Manitoba: Another section of Highway 75 is closed

Continuing floods in southern Manitoba have closed another section of Highway 75, and one city is now blocked on three sides.

The city of Maurice is surrounded by floods and causes detours and headaches for people in the area.

“We have huge sections of roads covered with water. There will be really significant damage to the infrastructure and we will have a lot of work to do to do that, “said Ralph Groening, head of Maurice’s RM.

With the closure of Highway 75, drivers are already moving around a wide area around the water.

“Everyone on the Red River will be affected. We have workers who go to our public workshop in Rosenort. They have significant circumvention. “

Circumvention also affects the transport industry. The Manitoba Truck Association said it added an additional 165 kilometers to travel and a few hundred dollars more gasoline on each trip – affecting many trucks trying to cross the border at Emerson.

“It’s a little difficult to quantify. I would suggest hundreds, if not thousands. “What will happen is that people can find other ports through which to direct traffic with other detours,” said Aaron Dolinyuk, executive director of the Manitoba Truck Association.

Although roads in the area are affected, authorities say no major damage has been done. But an emergency center has been set up for those in need.

“We are ready to respond to any concerns,” Groening said. “Questions you have, we will work with people who need to be evacuated. Call us and our emergency coordinator will provide support. We are there to work for our community. “

RM said about two dozen properties are currently under threat, mainly due to flooded access roads.

RM added that the main goal at the moment is to prevent Rosenort from being isolated from flooding and they are currently trying to build a road there to prevent it from sinking.
