Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, fired liberal state attorney general Andrew Warren on Thursday.
DeSantis made the announcement during a press conference Thursday broadcast on social media. DeSantis alleges that Warren has repeatedly refused to enforce laws passed by the Legislature that mandate measures against child sex-reassignment surgeries and abortion restrictions.
“We are suspending Soros-backed 13th District Attorney Andrew Warren for dereliction of duty because he promised not to follow state law,” DeSantis’ office said in a statement. Runway 13 is located over Hillsborough County in Florida.
“The Florida Constitution has vested the veto power in the governor, not the state’s attorneys,” DeSantis said. “We will not allow this pathogen of lawlessness to establish itself in the state of Florida.

Officials said Warren repeatedly tried to assert himself as a judge over which laws would and would not be enforced.
DeSantis’ office teased Thursday’s move on Wednesday, saying the announcement would not be political or related to endorsements.
“This isn’t about abortion or anything, it’s about being accountable to our law and order system for prosecuting crime. Hillsborough County is developing a model where one person chooses which laws to enforce,” his office said.
