Four killed in house explosion in Pennsylvania

At least four people were killed and two others were injured in an explosion at a house Thursday night in a neighborhood about 40 miles north of Philadelphia, authorities said.

Police and firefighters in Potstown, Pennsylvania, were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m., Justin M. Keller, a local official, told reporters during a news conference. They found “many victims in need of medical care,” he said.

In addition to the four confirmed deaths, two people have been hospitalized and two others may be unaccounted for, Mr Keller said. He added that an investigation was under way and a number of agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police and the Red Cross, sent staff to the scene late Thursday night.

Information on the cause of the explosion and the identities of those killed or injured was not available early Friday. The Potstown Police Department could not be immediately reached for comment.

Stephen J. Rodriguez, the head of the Potstown school district, said in a statement to parents on Thursday night that classes would be canceled on Friday due to the explosion.
