Four people are in critical condition after being struck by lightning near the White House

The lightning struck Lafayette Park, which is directly across from the White House, Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said at a news conference Thursday evening.

“All four had critical, life-threatening injuries” when help arrived, said Maggiolo, who was unable to provide additional details about the incident or the victims’ conditions.

According to a law enforcement source, the victims were coming out of the storm under a tree.

Two men and two women were taken to area hospitals, DC Fire and EMS said on Twitter. Maggiolo said officers from the uniformed division of the Secret Service and the park police were on the scene immediately to help with the response.

A severe thunderstorm hit the DC area around 7:00 PM ET on Thursday.
