Franken defeats Finkenauer in Iowa Senate primary

Retired Navy Administrator Mike Franken was expected to win a Democratic nomination Tuesday to face Senator Chuck Grassley (Iowa) in November.

The Associated Press predicts Franken’s victory around 10:13 p.m. ET.

Franken, who has never held an election before, previously sought to nominate the Democratic Party in the Iowa Senate in 2020.

Despite his status as a relatively newcomer to politics, Franken has gained considerable momentum in the primary election in recent weeks. He surpassed his main rival, the former Republican Republic of Abbey Finkenauer (Iowa), in both of the last two fundraising periods and spent heavily on advertising.

Franken’s victory was a blow to Finkenauer, who moved to the Republican House in 2018 only to lose his re-election two years later.

Once the nomination is locked, Franken will continue in the general election in November. But removing Grassley will probably be a big challenge.

The seven-term incumbent is a well-known staple in Iowa politics and has a history of re-election by a wide margin. The last time Grassley was on the ballot, in 2016, he won more than 60 percent of the vote.

Grassley also has a significant bank account for the campaign. His latest funding for the federal campaign shows that he has more than $ 4.3 million in the bank. By comparison, Franken said he had only about $ 253,000 in his campaign coffers.
