Fulham returns to the Premier League as a second-tier champion
Fulham won the championship after a 7-0 victory at home against Luton Town on Monday.
The Cottages were already secure for their place in the Premier League next term, after winning a promotion last month. But now they have confirmed the crown in the lead with another match.
They comfortably coped with the playoffs, chasing Luton Town, with Alexander Mitrovic adding another occasion to break Guy Whittingham’s long-standing record for most goals of the season in the second tier. Mitrovic scored his fourth goal for Fulham, his 42nd goal of the season, ahead of his record 43rd in added time.

Tom Kearney and Kenny Tete scored in the first half before Fabio Carvalho won a well-executed third. Bobby Decordova-Reed added a fifth before Jean-Michel Serry scored a sixth. This is the third promotion for Fulham in the top league in five years after winning the playoffs in 2018 and 2020.
Marco Silva’s team also reached another stage, surpassing a century of league goals this term. This ensures that they became the first second-tier team after Manchester City to do so. City achieved the feat when they won the First Division title 20 years ago, in the 2001-02 campaign.
The Cottages have been productive throughout the campaign, scoring six goals in two league games this season before, and also winning 7-0 away to both Blackburn Rovers and Reading. While Mitrovic was in the lead, it was a team full of attacking talent.

Harry Wilson’s summer signing is booming with Fabio Carvalho, who plays for Liverpool, who is enjoying a breakthrough season since making his debut last term. Wilson’s Welsh international team-mate Neco Williams has also made an impression since arriving on loan from Liverpool in January and a number of team members from last season have stayed to help the team rise again.
The promotion means that Silva will run a fourth different club in the Premier League. His first job in England came from a relegation from Hull City in 2017, and he also had periods at the helm of Watford and Everton before moving to West London.
Fulham’s last Premier League campaign started slowly, with four straight defeats by the start of the season and they never fully recovered. They never climbed above 17th place in the table and ended up falling by only 28 points.
