Critics lashed out at Thames Water’s response to the floods. Jeremy Corbyn, the local MP and former Labor leader, said burst water pipes were a recurring problem in the area and called for the water companies to be nationalised.
“It’s not the first time he’s gone. God knows how many times this road has been dug up to repair pipes,” he said.
“Thames Water is not investing enough in its infrastructure. They don’t want to invest the money. The amount of water lost each year would fill Loch Ness.
“I think it’s time to abandon privatization and put it back under public control. They are not responsible, the water companies.”
Feargle Sharkey, the musician and clean rivers campaigner, said the floods showed “what decades of underinvestment look like”.
