Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher spar on Twitter after Cristiano Ronaldo’s bombshell Man Utd transfer request

GARY NEVILLE and Jamie Carragher engaged in a public spat on Twitter on Saturday over Cristiano Ronaldo’s demand to leave Manchester United.

Ronaldo, 37, recently informed club chiefs that he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer if a satisfactory offer is received.

He is said to be unhappy at the prospect of playing in the Europa League next season for the first time in almost two decades as he wants another crack at Champions League glory.

But despite being named Manchester United fans’ player of the year, Liverpool icon Carragher believes Ronaldo actually made the Red Devils WORSE last season.

He tweeted: “Ronaldo did exactly what I thought he would do, scored goals but made the team even worse.

“The transfer request also kills the idea that he rejected Man City because of his love for Man Utd!”

This prompted an impassioned reaction from United legend Neville, who responded with: “I understand you are full of yourselves, but he can turn down City for United because he likes them better and still wants to leave this summer. He left before but still loved the club.

“Enjoy your Saturday night and your brief period of success.”

Carragher hit back at the taunt by calling his Sky Sports colleague a clown, adding: “City didn’t want you (clown face emoji) and you’re the same guy who kept saying it’s like Elvis has arrived in Manchester!” left the building.”

And Neville ended the row with a reference to the music icon, simply stating: “A little less talk.”

Carragher has previously called for the Red Devils to get rid of Ronaldo, claiming he is a poor addition to the squad.

The former defender said: “I am convinced [Ten Hag] he should do it with Ronaldo. I am convinced.

“Whether he’s allowed to or not, and I’ve been saying it all the time this season, it wasn’t a good signing.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time and I am the person who criticizes Ronaldo.

“Ronaldo is miles a better player than me; apparently I couldn’t even tie his shoes.

“But I don’t say that to disrespect him – he’s amazing.

“Ronaldo has never played in such a bad team. He always played for great teams.

“His attitude of trying to be the main man, score goals, drive people; when you’re on a great team, they’re seen as positive.

“When you don’t play for a great team it can be seen as a negative and I think this season has been a negative.

“Man United cannot go into next season with a striker who will be 38.

“Even if he scores goals, it’s not right for Man United – one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Manchester United have insisted that Ronaldo will remain at Reds until his contract expires next summer, but Chelsea and Bayern Munich have already considered a move away.

The Blues are monitoring his situation at Old Trafford as they look to make him a signature.

New boss Todd Boilley recently met with 37-year-old Jorge Mendes’ agent in Portugal to discuss a potential move.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are also interested in signing him as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who is set to leave in the next few months.
