California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced today that he tested positive for Covid-19, although it was doubled by vaccination and reinforcement. He is showing only mild symptoms and will start taking Paxlovid to fight the virus, according to a statement from his office.
The news comes as the number of those infected in the state has risen rapidly in recent weeks, even as the governor seeks to keep the focus on initiatives on global leadership in climate change, arms control, rent relief and water conservation.
Sacramento, where Newsom lives and works, has a positive test rate, well above the already high average for the state. The 7-day pass rate in California is 7%. Sacramento County reached 10.4% on Friday. Given that so many residents use test kits at home that are not reported in official data, the real percentage is probably much higher.
Here is the announcement issued by Newsom’s office today:
This morning, the governor tested positive for COVID-19 after showing mild symptoms. The governor will continue to work remotely. According to local and state health guidelines, Governor Newsom will remain in isolation until at least Thursday, June 2, and until his test is negative.
As stated in California’s SMARTER plan, which focuses on testing and treatment, the governor will test before leaving isolation. The governor also received a prescription for Paxlovid, an antiviral drug that has been shown to be effective against COVID-19, and will immediately begin its 5-day regimen. Governor Newsom was vaccinated and received two booster vaccines, including on May 18.
