Los Angeles Progressive District Attorney George Gascon withdrew his claim that the county sheriff’s department had “agreed to the crime charges” and the lenient sentence against a teenager convicted of driving with a mother and her 8-month-old son.
The 17-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by force, which could cause grievous bodily harm and one crime of hitting and running, but was sentenced to five to seven months in a juvenile probation camp. Prosecutors described the camp as “less than a military school and a little stricter than a summer camp.”
The original incident occurred on August 6, 2021.
Gascon’s initial statement to Fox News Digital said the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department agreed with the charges and sentence.
“Fortunately, the baby was unharmed and the mother received a torn elbow wound,” his office told Fox News Digital Friday. “The sheriff’s department agreed with the charges. In the indictment, the juvenile pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by force, which could cause grievous bodily harm and one crime of hitting and running. The probation department recommended and the court sentenced the juvenile to a youth camp for five to seven months, an appropriate decision.

The statement added that juvenile justice aims to “rehabilitate young people”.
“In this case, this teenager will be held accountable for his actions and will receive the necessary services to promote positive development to prevent him from committing future crimes,” the statement said.
After Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva called Gascon and said, “We were never consulted because we were not the investigating agency,” the Gasco office corrected the statement on Saturday, saying the sheriff’s office was not involved.
“We need to correct our statement from yesterday. The LASD did not participate in the decision on the charge of a serious crime, as they are not the investigating body in the case, “said a spokesman for the district prosecutor’s office.
Villanueva said earlier that his office had not been consulted on the allegations.
“We have never been consulted because we were not the investigating agency,” the Los Angeles official wrote on Facebook and Twitter early Saturday. “The sheriff’s investigators would never agree to a light sentence in this case for running away. Stop empowering and encouraging criminal behavior. Hold them accountable #VictimsMatter. “
Video surveillance captured the incident on camera, which shows the car hitting the mother, who was walking her child in a stroller.

The mother wrote in the victim’s impact report that she believed “these are the last moments of our lives”.
“I thought these were the last moments of our lives; we were dead, “said the mother, who asked to be identified only as Rachel in the victim’s statement. “This feeling, along with the memory of a car speeding directly inside us, will haunt me forever.”
Police sources say that the driver, who was 16 at the time, initially told police that the mother came out of nowhere and hit her in an accident with the stolen car.

“As the car approached me and my child, I stopped walking and moved the stroller and myself against a building on the right side of the road to ensure we gave the reckless driver plenty of room to cross,” Rachel said. “When the car came dangerously close to us, [the juvenile suspect] he turned the wheels in our direction and accelerated while aiming to kill us.
Rachel angered the Gascon for what he thought was an extremely light sentence.
“I was also told that his recording would be deleted when he turned 18,” she continued. “How the hell can that be?” He tried to kill two innocent pedestrians. Murder. And we have video proof. My child would have been dead if I hadn’t been there to protect him. “
