TORONTO – With smiles after a wild 6-5 victory, Blue Jace manager Charlie Montoyo wanted to highlight his post-match comments with a bit of spice after his team unveiled the drama on Tuesday night.
“He wants me to drop F-bombs because what happened is pretty cool,” Montoyo said with a laugh.
George Springer hit Homer with two runs in the ninth inning to level the game, and Raimel Tapia made the winning victim of the game in the 10th, while the Blue Jays (12-6) defeated the weakened Boston Red Sox for their sixth win in seven games.
“It was a full team effort, it was great to see,” said the radiant Montoyo. “Everyone had something to do to win this match.”
A rather dull, stubborn affair turned into the eighth inning when Boston scored four runs from Toronto’s Yimi Garcia.
Boston’s Jake Dickman finished ninth with a three-run cushion, but lost to Tapia and Santiago Espinal. Two outs followed before Springer gave a quick ball to his fourth Homer of the Year and 200th of his career.
“I was just honestly trying to prolong the inning,” Springer said. “I was hoping I could hit something hard and get to first base. I know who’s behind me. I managed to hit Homer there.”
Jordan Romano (1-1) withdrew the Red Sox to set the stage for Toronto’s order in the bottom half in the 10th inning.
With Bo Bichette in second base to start the extra frame, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was deliberately spent and Alejandro Kirk loaded the bases with another move.
After Matt Barnes (0-1) cut off Matt Chapman, Matt Stram entered and Tapia fouled five pitches before finally lifting the ball to the left field, which Bichette scored.
“No matter what the outcome, you feel that if we are close to it at the end of the game, we will have a chance,” said Toronto starting player Kevin Gaussman, who threw six strong innings.
Boston (7-11) dropped out four in a row and six of their last seven.
Gaussman shot nine and conceded four hits and a missed run, reducing his running average to 2.19 from 2.89.
Boston starter Nick Piveta, a native of Victoria, scored six in 4 2/3 innings. He gave up three hits, made four shots and conceded two runs.
“Nick played great, everyone played great, the attackers scored when they had to,” Dickman said. “I need to be able to hold a three-run lead.”
The announced attendance was 22,611. The game took three hours and 47 minutes.
MAKE PROGRESS
Blue Jace striker Theoscar Hernandez took part in the cotton training while continuing to progress after suffering a tilted tension on the left a few weeks ago.
Left-handed Hyun Jin Ryu (forearm inflammation) and right-winger Nate Pearson (mononucleosis) held sessions on Tuesday, Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said before his game.
TIGHTENED HAMI
Blue Jace Lourdes outfielder Guriel Jr. was not in the starting lineup after dealing with some tension in the hamstring on Monday night.
He entered as a striker in the ninth inning on Tuesday, but out. Gurriel stayed in the game at first base.
BIG BATS
Entering Tuesday’s game, the Blue Jays led the big league with 25 Homers this season.
Guerrero, who was selected as striker on Tuesday, leads the team with five homers and 12 RBIs.
WACHA WACHA
The right-wingers are scheduled to play on Wednesday night. Toronto will send Ross Stripling (0-0, 4.50 ERA) against Michael Wacha of Boston (1-0, 1.88).
