Former football star Herschel Walker, who is now a candidate for the Senate of Georgia, said abortion should be banned without exception, including cases involving rape or maternal health problems. The Republican candidate made the controversial comment as he spoke to reporters after a speech in Wednesday’s election campaign.
“I don’t think there is an exception,” said the former athlete. “As I said, I believe in life. I believe in life. ”
Speaking to The Hill after speaking out against the reaction, Walker said it was “for life and I will not apologize for it.”
With Georgia’s initial election in 2022 on Tuesday, Walker is expected to secure the Republican nomination. He will then face Senator Rafael Warnock in November.
The issue of abortion has attracted increased attention in recent weeks after reporters leaked a draft Supreme Court opinion aimed at overturning Rowe v. Wade. As Blaviti said earlier, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito wrote the draft opinion, seeking to reject the 1973 ruling guaranteeing federal constitutional protection of abortion rights.
“Rowe is extremely wrong from the start,” Judge Alito wrote in the draft. “We believe that Rowe and Casey should be abolished. It is time to listen to the constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s deputies.
But Democrats are fighting.
“Laws passed by Republicans across the country and the national ban that Republicans in Washington want are the most extreme of the extremes and the beginning of Republican attempts to use the Supreme Court to turn the clock back to a time when women, blacks and all LGBTQ people are considered second-class citizens, “Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y. said.
Walker received approval from National Right to Life.
“Herschel Walker will be the most effective champion for unborn babies and their mothers in Washington, D.C., and he has shown the passion and perseverance needed to win the critical race in the Georgia Senate,” said Carol Tobias, the organization’s president. “Georgia deserves a senator in favor of life like Herschel Walker, who is committed to building a culture of life. Walker’s position on life contrasts sharply with Warnock’s writings, which support abortion for any reason until birth.
