Kyiv – Warning: This story contains disturbing details.
Ominous scenes from areas outside the Ukrainian capital suggest that Russian troops carried out massacres as they withdrew.
Near Kyiv in Motizhyn, the bodies of the village mayor and her family lay in a shallow grave on Monday, untouched by fear of traps.
“There, in the hole, lies my family,” a man told Reuters at the scene. “I do not know why they were killed. They were peaceful, kind people. “
Even closer to Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky toured the massacre left in Bucha, where the streets were littered with bodies, some tied up and apparently executed at close range.
“We know of thousands killed and tortured, with severed limbs, raped women, murdered children,” Zelenski told reporters on Monday. “This is genocide.”
The horrific photos have heightened international outrage and calls for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be charged with war crimes.
At Antonov Airport in Hostomel, the world’s largest plane was destroyed and surrounded by rubble. Russia sent paratroopers to the airport in the early hours of the invasion in an apparent attempt to secure it as a launching pad for an attack on Kyiv, but never managed to use its runway.
“With liberation comes poverty in old age,” a man close to CTV National News chief international correspondent Paul Workman said. “All I have left is what I carry on my bike.”
