After numerous leaks and speculations, Google finally decided to show its first smartwatch at the I / O 2022 event last week. Although we have only received confirmed details about the design and timeline of the launch of the Pixel Watch, other details are well under the rug. However, the latest information gives us a hint about the smartwatch chip and looks disappointing.
Pixel Watch to include a really old Exynos chip
A recent 9to5Google report confirms a previous leak and reveals that the Pixel Watch will be powered by an Exynos chip. But it is expected to be the Exynos 9110 chip, which was seen on the Galaxy Watch in 2018. It was also seen on the Galaxy Watch Active, Active 2 and even the Galaxy Watch 3.
This comes as a surprise to many, as the Exynos chipset in question was the Exynos W920, which powers the latest Galaxy Watch 4. It would make more sense, given that it is the latest chip based on 5nm technology and offers much faster CPU and GPU performance.
However, the report suggests that the decision to use an older chip may be due to the fact that Google began working on its ambitions for a smartwatch some time ago. Therefore, the Exynos 9110 chip seems like an obvious choice. Switching to the latest Exynos chipset would delay the availability of the Pixel Watch, according to the report.
Since there may be a four-year-old chip under the hood, we’re not sure how the Pixel Watch will perform. However, it remains to be seen how Google plans to optimize the hardware and software, which, if they go well, could be useful for the smartwatch.
As for other details, the Pixel Watch is also expected to have a 300 mAh battery and offer 24-hour battery life, which is on par with the Fossil Gen 6, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and more. It is expected to work with WearOS 3.0 out of the box and come with integration with Fitbit, but we still do not know if this will be true.
It has been confirmed that the Pixel Watch will launch alongside the Pixel 7 series this fall. Therefore, we have to wait until then to get a final idea of Google’s smartwatch. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts on the auditory details of the Pixel Watch chips in the comments below.
