After years of speculation, we finally know what Google’s first internal smartwatch will be called. Surprisingly to no one, a new trademark filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office reveals that it’s … Pixel Watch.
Submitting (via Google 9to5) is as simple as it gets. The description says that the name of the Pixel Watch is “designed to cover the categories of smart watches; Cases adapted for holding smart watches; Wearable computers in the nature of smart watches; smart watch straps; Smart watch bands. “The documentation goes on to say that while the Pixel Watch name is not currently in use, it is intended to be used. Not to mention, Google recently changed its store with more notable watches. that Google has smart watches in its brain.
The name signals Google’s intention to carry the device as a companion to its Pixel phones Pixel brand Image: USPTO
Of course, this name was completely expected, even if it was a bit anticlimactic. Technical media have for years referred to the concept of a smart watch Made by Google as Pixel Watch. It also makes sense when you consider that Big Tech uses smart watches to improve its ecosystems. Calling it the Pixel Watch, Google has signaled its intention to use the wearable device as a companion to its Pixel phones. And if that attracts more people to the web of Google widgets and services … Well, that was the plan all along.
We already have a pretty good idea of what to expect. The news that Google will finally make the Pixel Watch real broke in December and there were several leaks in renders and dials. Google has also been expected for a long time to annoy Pixel Watch on Google I / O next month – which the timing of this brand’s release is strongly supported. The Pixel Watch is also expected to include some integration of Fitbit with Wear OS 3. The smartwatch is also expected to cost more than Fitbit and serve as a direct competitor to the Apple Watch.
There are many reasons why 2022 is the year in which the stars finally lined up for the Pixel Watch. But despite misconceptions and rumors that never spread, Google has been laying the groundwork for Android smartwatches for years. Not only was it the first wearable game in 2014 with Android Wear, which has since been rebranded as Wear OS. In 2019, it was revealed that the Pixel Watch almost debuted years ago. The only reason it wasn’t was because these early attempts “didn’t look like what belonged to the Pixel family.” And to be honest, this was the right call, as the LG Watch Style and LG Watch Sport were great.
This suggests that this new watch is something Google is proud to put its name on. We’ll have to see what happens in Google I / O, but it looks like the long wait is finally coming to an end.
