Google unveils possible Pixel 7 Ultra smartphone

Google has already lifted the lid on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, but now the company has leaked a third-class Pixel smartphone and it may be the most intriguing of all.

A reference to the mysterious device was found by 9to5Google in the code of Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It includes mentions of the C10 Cheetah (Pixel 7 Pro), P10 Panther (Pixel 7), Felix and Lynx (budget Pixel 7a and delayed Pixel folding). The new device is a “G10” and 9to5Google believes it could be a new flagship model.

“Yes, we’re talking about what a potential Pixel Ultra might be,” explains Damien Wilde of 9to5Google.

Breaking the device, Wilde states that the code reveals that it works with a top-level display of 1440 x 3120 pixels with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which measures 71 x 155 mm (6.7-inch diagonal) – these specifications correspond to the Pixel 7 Pro. The difference is that while the AOSP code indicates that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will use the same Samsung displays as last year’s models, the G10 uses a new panel manufactured by BOE.

In addition, while the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have excellent displays, they are not as bright as the Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 13 Pro Max. So sticking to them in 2022 leaves room in Google’s range to add a new top model.

Little is known about this new device. The AOSP code did not link it to the second-generation Tensor chip “GS201” (codenamed Cloudripper) such as Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, which leaked this detail in the earlier beta code of Android 13. Although this pairing seems obvious, it leaves room for a version with a higher chip frequency (GS202?) if it’s really an Ultra model and Google is trying to differentiate.

In the end, we’ll have to wait for more details before we know if 9to5Google’s premonition is correct. But given Google’s tendency to reveal details in the Android code and with the new beta release of Android 13 coming soon, my hunch is that we won’t have to wait long for more.
