Governor approves $ 300 tax refund, signs law to raise minimum wage to $ 18

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Checks are underway.

At a ceremony Wednesday, the governor signed Senate Bill 514, which provides for a $ 300 tax refund on people who make less than $ 100,000 a year – or $ 200,000 as a family.

Under the law, a family of four can receive $ 1,200 in tax refunds.

Those who earn more than $ 100,000 a year will receive a $ 100 tax refund.

Officials said the state should start processing the refunds in the last week of August.

“I am sure, especially for these hard-working families, that $ 300 for each release will go back into the economy to strengthen other families,” said former spokeswoman Sylvia Luke, who is running for vice governor.

Also Wednesday, Gov. David Age signed a bill to raise Hawaii’s minimum wage to $ 18 an hour by January 1, 2028.

Ige said this “balanced approach” would begin gradually, starting with raising the minimum wage from $ 10.10 an hour to $ 12 in October. The minimum wage will then increase to:

  • $ 14 as of January 1, 2024
  • $ 16 from January 1, 2026
  • $ 18 as of January 1, 2028

Ige added that the increase was “long overdue” and would help 90,000 minimum wage workers in Hawaii. “I am excited to sign two bills that are really focused on helping working families and the people who need help the most,” Ige said.

The measure includes a tax refund, also allocating $ 500 million to the state fund for a “rainy day” and $ 300 million to the pension fund.
