Guelph charged with second-degree murder (UPDATE: by name)

Update: The man charged with second degree murder is James Dobbs. His bail hearing Thursday morning in Guelph court was postponed after Dobbs refused to leave his cell for a court appearance, a justice of the peace clerk handling the matter said. He later appeared briefly via video.

Dobbs was taken into custody. His next appearance is on July 26.

A ban has been placed on the publication of information that emerged during the bail hearing.

A Guelph man has been arrested and faces charges of second-degree murder after human remains were found Wednesday afternoon, Guelph police said.

On Monday, Guelph police received information that a homicide had occurred at a downtown apartment on Sunday. The investigation led police Wednesday to a location near the intersection of Wellington Street East and Windham Street South where the remains of an elderly man were located behind a business.

A suspect has been identified. That man was found late Wednesday morning and taken into custody.

Police were seen on Wednesday searching the river and riverbanks near the city centre.

A police car was parked outside 90 Carden St. on Thursday morning.

A 43-year-old Guelph man has been charged with second-degree murder. He was scheduled to appear in bail court in Guelph on Thursday.

Police have not released his name.

Police said they believe this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
