Gunman kills 3, shot by bystander

A shooting at a mall in Greenwood, Indiana, on Sunday night left at least four people dead, including the suspected gunman — who police say was shot by an armed bystander.

The latest: Authorities say a 12-year-old girl is among two wounded after a gunman opened fire with a long gun at a mall south of Indianapolis. Her injuries were minor, Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said in a statement.

  • Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said at a news conference late Sunday that the girl was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and the other person who was shot was in stable condition at a hospital. His injuries were not immediately released.

Breaking News: Police received reports just after 6 p.m. that a gunman had entered the diner and started shooting, Eason said at a news conference earlier in the evening.

  • “It appears he had a rifle with several magazines of ammunition,” Ison added.
  • He later confirmed that a 22-year-old gunman from nearby Bartholomew County shot the shooter.

“The real hero of the day is the citizen who legally carried a firearm in that diner and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he started.” – Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison

The big picture: The mall violence is the latest in a series of shootings that have rocked the US in recent weeks, including the massacres in Buffalo, New York and at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, that have prompted Congress to pass gun safety legislation.
