Hanmer man drowns in Manitoulin’s Lake Mindemoya

A 46-year-old man from Hanmer drowned after going kayaking on Lake Mindemoya on Manitoulin Island.

At approximately 1:50 p.m. on July 13, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Unified Chiefs and Councils of the Manitoulin Police Service (UCCM) and the Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedics responded to a drowning at Lake Mindemoya.

Investigation revealed that the individual was kayaking and did not return home. The individual was later located along the shoreline.

The deceased has been identified as Joseph Whittle of Hanmer.

The Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Office of Forensic Pathology (OCC-OCFPS) are assisting and an autopsy will be performed in Toronto at a later date.
