Four minutes after Ramos entered the school, Escalon said, Uwalde police and police from the school district were “inside and in.”
“They hear gunfire. They go around. “They’re coming back, they’re under cover,” Escalon said. “And in the meantime, they are approaching the place where the suspect is.”
Ramos hurried to a fourth-grade classroom, officials said. Olivares told CNN that Ramos “barricaded himself by locking the door and just started shooting at children and teachers who were in this classroom.”
“The officers are there, the original officers,” Escalon said Thursday. But they did not enter the classroom because they were under fire, he said. Ramos fired most of his shots early, Escalon said, saying he could not immediately offer an exact number.
