Representative Bill Pascrell (DN.J.) called on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to resign Thursday after news that his wife, Virginia “Ginny” Thomas, had sent an email to conservative lawyer John Eastman, who was central to former President Trump’s efforts. to cancel the 2020 presidential election
In a statement Thursday, Pascrell said Thomas “cannot be considered a neutral actor”, calling him a “corrupt lawyer”.
“Over the last few years, we have been stunned by the bad actions of powerful actors, but Clarence and Ginny Thomas have been involved in one of the worst breaches of trust ever seen in our judiciary,” Pascrell said.
“Clarence Thomas cannot be seen as a neutral actor, but instead as a corrupt lawyer who has poisoned the Supreme Court. “Clarence Thomas must have dignity and final respect for our democracy and resign,” he added.
The call came less than a day after The Washington Post reported that an elected House of Representatives committee investigating the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, had received an email communication between Ginny Thomas and Eastman. However, the sources do not provide details of the correspondence.
This revelation added to the piles of reporting details of Thomas’ links to efforts to undo the 2020 results.
In March, news emerged that Thomas had sent text messages to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows following the presidential election over the reversal effort.
Earlier this month, The Post reported that it called on 29 GOP lawmakers in Arizona to elect new presidential voters in a bid to reverse President Biden’s victory there.
The commission asked Thomas to speak to the panel on 6 January; Thomas said Thursday, “I look forward to speaking with them,” adding: “I can’t wait to clear up my misconceptions.”
In a statement, Pascrell referred to reports of a “conspiracy” of Thomas with Trump and his allies, while noting that Clarence Thomas had heard cases related to the 2020 elections before the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has ruled on at least 10 decisions on the 2020 election. Among the most notable was the January ruling, which allowed the January 6 commission to receive White House records from the Trump administration.
Thomas was the only judge to overturn the decision.
“Last night we read more reports that the wife of the longest-serving Supreme Court judge has been actively involved in a conspiracy with Donald Trump and his allies to cancel the election and overthrow American democracy,” Pascrell wrote.
“And while she was doing all this, her husband, Judge Thomas, was hearing lawsuits related to the 2020 elections to the Supreme Court,” he added.
In a tweet, the congressman said: “Ginny Thomas was complicit in the 1/6 Capitol uprising as Judge Thomas considered a trial over the 2020 election,” adding: “Thomas has proven to be a corrupt actor. which has undermined public confidence. “
“For the good of the court and the nation, he must resign NOW,” he said.
Pascrell is not the first lawmaker to call for Thomas’ resignation. In March, representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) and Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) Called for justice to resign. Others have called on him to withdraw from cases involving the January 6th bombing.
However, some of Thomas’ colleagues offer support. Judge Sonia Sotomayor said this week that her conservative colleague “is a man who cares deeply about the court as an institution”.
