WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives has passed a bill that would protect same-sex and interracial marriage under federal law, with Democratic lawmakers saying a recent Supreme Court decision ending abortion rights could threaten other precedents.
The 267-157 vote on the Respect for Marriage Act comes the same week the House is scheduled to vote on the Contraceptive Rights Act. Both pieces of legislation would enshrine in law rights that are not enumerated in the Constitution but have been recognized by courts in recent decades. Senate Democrats have not said whether they will schedule a vote on the House bills.
