Where to broadcast live the total lunar eclipse “Bloody Moon”.

There are so many fake live streams on YouTube that show all sorts of old junk that could easily be a previous eclipse or even something less relevant.

Avoid them all and head to these two reliable live broadcasts from Timeanddate.com and from Flagstaff, Lowell Observatory in Arizona. You will see the real thing and learn a lot:

How to shoot the total lunar eclipse of “Blood Moon”.

There are some great tutorials on how to capture a total lunar eclipse using a smartphone and a “proper” camera – see here, here and here – but the basics are:

How to make a close-up of Bloody Moon.

  • use a mirrorless or DSR camera with a 500-600mm telephoto lens (although 300mm will almost do the trick).
  • focus on infinity.
  • Start with ISO 100, aperture f / 8 and shutter speed 1 / 125-1 / 250 sec, but when the set starts and the moon turns red, try ISO 800 and f4-f8. Experiment with the shutter speed, but not slower than 1/2 sec.

How to shoot “Blood Moon” with a smartphone

  • take something interesting in the foreground – such as a tree, a building or a mountain (but avoid anything brightly lit).
  • put your smartphone on a tripod, because it will take a long exposure.
  • lock your exposure to the moon by tapping it on the screen, then take the picture. This will take a few seconds, probably about 25 seconds if you are in a dark place (the darker the better!).
  • experiment with manual settings if your phone allows you to do this / if you have a third-party application.

The combination of pictures shows the moon before (L), during (C) and after (R) a total eclipse over the southern … [+] California, as seen from the city of Korea (west of downtown) Los Angeles in early April 15, 2014. The entire event was supposed to be visible from North and South America, but sky watchers in Northern and Eastern Europe, East Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia was unlucky, according to NASA.AFP PHOTO / JOE KLAMAR (Photo credit must read JOE KLAMAR / AFP via Getty Images)

How to observe a total lunar eclipse “Blood Moon”.

All you need are your own naked eyes and clear skies, although a pair of binoculars (or a small telescope) will help you get a great close-up.

There are different stages of the eclipse to observe, especially the partial phase when the moon begins to turn red. However, with such a long set, all you have to do is be outside at any time within that set of 84 minutes.
