On 12 March 2021, Lord Cruddas rose to make his first speech in the upper house. The billionaire Tory donor offered the usual reflections on his life story, then turned to the work of a close friend: Rishi Sunak.

Both men were Eurosceptics who supported the Leave campaign when it might have been politically advantageous not to. Both were beneficiaries of Boris Johnson’s patronage.
