LEISBURG, Virginia (AP) – A political newcomer and Vietnamese immigrant has emerged from a field of 11 candidates to win a Republican nomination in the Northern Virginia Congressional District.
Hung Cao, a retired Navy officer, won the nomination in Virginia’s 10th District, which covers the outer suburbs of the nation’s capital.
He will face two terms as Democrat Jennifer Wexton in November.
Republicans elected Cao in the primary election in the fire department by voting with a ranked election.
He led in each round, but many candidates were eliminated before gaining a majority over his closest rival, Prince William County Governor Janine Lawson.
