A large fire that briefly closed sections of Hwy. 401 in both directions east of Oshawa is a storage building belonging to Durham Regional Police, the Sun has learned.

Sources say the fire on Courtice Rd. destroy an assortment of police equipment that includes K9 vehicles, a tactical unit bomb truck, ammunition, uniforms, an incident command truck, a marine cutter and other new vehicles.
Hwy. 401 has since reopened.
Durham cops said crews were on the scene early Sunday evening.
Hwy. The 401 was closed in both directions between Harmony Rd. in Oshawa and Hwy. 418, the Ontario Provincial Police said Sunday evening. The southbound lanes of Hwy. 418 were also closed between Regional Hwy. 2 and Hwy. 401.
People were asked to avoid the area of Baseline Rd. between Courtice Rd. and McKnight Rd.
