Instagram is changing its algorithm to better appreciate the original content

Good news for photographers who post their own images, Instagram plans to tweak its algorithm to “appreciate the original content more.”

Instagram CEO Adam Moseri turned to Twitter to explain the change and underscore the social media platform’s commitment to helping creators get the credit they deserve.

“If you create something from scratch, you need to get more credit than if you re-share something you found from someone else,” says Moseri.

The 39-year-old went on to explain that the social media giant plans to appreciate the original content in front of aggregators.

“The creators are extremely important for the future of Instagram and we want to make sure that they are successful in the platform and get all the credit they deserve.”

In subsequent comments, Moseri added that Instagram is already trying to prioritize original content, but acknowledged that it is difficult for the company to determine what is and what is not innovative work. The platform does its best to predict whether a photo or video is original, but “can’t know for sure.”

“If the account is an aggregator, we are more likely to find that it is not original. If someone pretends to be the original creator, which is less likely, but it can happen, it will be difficult for us to understand, “explains Moseri.

The move seems to be aimed at discouraging accounts that simply collect and distribute popular photos, memes and other content. This is part of Meta’s broader strategy to encourage creators to publish original content instead of re-sharing videos from TikTok and other applications.

Algorithm changes

Instagram has been experimenting a lot with its feed over the last year, such as posting more recommendations for accounts that users don’t follow.

Earlier this week, the photo-sharing app once and no longer introduced the ability for all users to tag products in their posts. This allows each photo to act as an advertisement.

However, for anyone who doesn’t like Instagram’s ranked feed, the app has recently returned its chronological feed. It’s not enabled by default, but users can access it by clicking on the Instagram logo at the top and tapping the “Follow” button.
