Johnny Depp was hallucinating and his sobriety had completely collapsed in the last months of his marriage, his ex-wife, fellow actor Amber Heard in the civil case between them, testified on Monday.
Hurd returned to the courtroom after the trial was resumed in a courtroom in Virginia after a one-week break.
Hurd also reviewed earlier testimony about the moment she first said she was physically assaulted by Depp. And she flatly denied Depp’s accusation that she left human feces in the couple’s bed after a fight. Hurd said the couple’s Yorkshire Terrier had messed up the bed and that the dog had had bowel problems since accidentally swallowing Depp’s marijuana.
“Absolutely not,” she said of the alleged poop joke. “I do not think it is funny. I don’t know what a grown woman does. I wasn’t in the mood for a joke. “
The accusation of feces is one of several that Depp’s online fans have clung to, especially in their criticism of Hurd on social media.
Depp is suing Hurd in Fairfax County Court for defamation over an article she wrote in the Washington Post describing herself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.” His lawyers say he was slandered by the 2018 article, although he never mentions his name.
Monday is Hurd’s third day on the witness stand in the trial, which is now in its fifth week. Her testimony on Monday focused mainly on the last months of the couple’s marriage, which lasted from 2015 to 2016.
“He was talking to people who weren’t in the room,” she said. “It was horrible. It was not clear to me if he was angry with me at all or if he was convinced that the man he said he had seen me with was in the room. “
The jury saw a video of Depp banging on cabinets in the kitchen and pouring himself a large glass of wine, while Hurd tried to figure out why Depp was angry.
Early in her testimony on Monday, she corrected herself about the moment she first said Depp had slapped her around her to ask him about one of his tattoos. Hurd initially said it happened in 2013, but she said Monday that it actually happened in 2012. She said her confusion was due to the fact that she wanted to believe in her mind that the abuse did not started so early in their relationship.
“I had allowed myself to forget that the beginning was also violent and chaotic,” she said.
Hurd told jurors that she had been physically and sexually abused many times before and during her brief marriage to Depp. Depp, after testifying, denies hitting Hurd.
The details of their relationship are important to the case, because one of her defenses is that she was indeed mistreated by Depp.
