Ivana Trump, the first wife of former President Donald Trump, died in a crash as a result of blunt force trauma to her torso, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York said Friday.
The official ruling came a day after Ivana, 73, was found dead at her Manhattan residence after the New York Fire Department responded to a call from there.
Earlier on Friday, the New York State Attorney’s Office said it had agreed to a request by lawyers for Donald Trump and two of his children to postpone their testimony, which had been scheduled for next week, in light of Ivana’s death.
A spokeswoman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Ivana’s cause of death was “blunt force trauma” and the manner of her death was “accidental.”
“After publishing this determination, OCME will not be commenting further on the investigation,” the spokeswoman said.
A senior New York City official told NBC News on Thursday that Ivana Trump was found on the spiral staircase of her apartment when authorities first arrived.
Before the medical examiner’s findings were released Friday, Donald Trump said “out of love and respect for Ivana” he was postponing a rally planned for Saturday in Arizona in support of Republican gubernatorial candidate Cary Lake until July 22.
Ivana, who is a former model and ski racer, was born in what was then Czechoslovakia.
She married the brash real estate mogul Trump in 1977 and went on to hold senior positions in his companies, including the Trump Organization.
The couple has three children, Donald Trump Jr., 44, Ivanka Trump, 40, and Eric Trump, 38.
Trump’s 1990 divorce was acrimonious, with both sides fighting in the Big Apple tabloids, The New York Post and Daily News, as well as in the courtroom.
The split was at least partially prompted by Donald Trump’s affair with Marla Maples, who became his second wife.
Trump, 76, married his third wife Melania in 2005.
The elder Trump, Donald Jr. and Ivanka were scheduled to be deposed next week by investigators from Attorney General Letitia James’ office as part of an investigation into how the Trump Organization understated the value of various real estate assets. James is investigating whether the company illegally manipulated those ratings for financial benefits, such as reduced taxes or more favorable loan terms.
Eric Trump was previously impeached in the case, but invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 500 times, James’ office said in a court filing in January.
A spokeswoman for James said on Friday: “In light of Ivana Trump’s death yesterday, we have received a request from the attorney for Donald Trump and his children to postpone all three depositions, which we have agreed to.”
“This is a temporary delay and the testimony will be rescheduled as soon as possible. There is no other information on dates or anything to provide at this time,” the spokeswoman said.
“We extend our condolences to the Trump family.
