Jacob Rees-Mogg is considering a Tory leadership bid

Conservatives on the right are becoming increasingly concerned that there will not be a strong enough candidate to make it to the final two candidates who will go before members.

One Tory MP told Chopper’s Politics: “There is no panic, but there is a potential problem. We do not want fragmentation of the right. People need to talk to each other.”

Two days ago, a bid for Mr Rees-Mogg to run for Prime Minister won the unexpected backing of former Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten.

Rotten, whose real name is John Lydon, told Talk TV: “I love this respect for the Second World War, putting Britain first that it has.” And in every interview I’ve ever seen him do, he’s been on the floor with their humor. And I think he’s a really good guy.

Mr Rees-Mogg responded by saying he was “honoured”, although he suspected the punk singer had made the comment in jest.

At the age of 12, Mr Rees-Mogg famously said he would “love to be Prime Minister” by the time he was 70 after building a successful career in the City. He is still only 53 years old.
